D&D Kickstarter

I haven't touched this blog in months, but this kickstarter is so cool I felt it necessary to post even though it is likely few if any will read this.

Tim Hutchings is offering the following:

"A print book compiling fantasy RPG adventures written by folks like us back in the day. A mix of nostalgia and old-school playability."

From Our Man on (Off-Off) Broadway

Playbill reports that Qui Nguyen's She Kills Monsters, a comedy about us folks who play D&D, will open on November 17 at The Flea Theater.

The play focuses on Agnes who "is finally leaving her childhood home following the death of her totally weird sister, Tilly. When she stumbles upon Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook; however, Agnes embarks on an action-packed adventure to discover more about her sister than she previously cared to know. A octane comedy fraught with hostile faeries, randy ogres, and '90s pop culture."

The Flea will also host a D&D-inspired art exhibit: "Doomslangers," artist Casey Jex Smith's works focusing on a "D&D adventure to save the mythical city of Dingershare from the evil Lord Ricaek."

    Greetings from Club Tek

h/t Grognardia: The following is a press release from the Tekumel Foundation.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    July 27, 2011
    Minneapolis, MN

THE WORLD OF TÉKUMEL AND OTHER MATERIALS SECURED

The Tékumel Foundation is proud to announce that on Saturday, June 11th, 2011 Professor Barker's Tékumel materials and wargaming supplies were moved from his home to secure, climate-controlled storage. This project was long and carefully planned and carried out with the blessing and encouragement of Professor Barker and his wife Ambereen and the assistance of dedicated volunteers, some of whom flew in from out of state. The Tékumel Foundation is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Professor M.A.R. Barker and building an archive of Tékumel memorabilia and documents. Foundation members assisted by Lady Anka’a and various Tékumel fans catalogued, photographed, carefully boxed and transported these materials to a secure climate-controlled storage area in less than 10 hours. Items secured include Professor Barker’s globe of Tékumel, the scale model Temple of Vimúhla first displayed at GenCon IX in 1976, private maps, papers and other interesting and diverse items including unpublished material –exactly how much or what is still to be determined. There is still much work to be done. Paper items need to be digitally scanned to secure storage; items may need to be repaired and/or restored. Items not directly connected to Tékumel must be organized, including wargaming materials, fanzines of the 1950’s, and games that at various times had been sent to Professor Barker for review. Fortunately, the Tékumel Foundation has people with the necessary skills to assist with this enormous project. It is hoped Professor Barker’s papers will yield new material for Tékumel, and we are optimistic that there is “good new stuff” to be published. Photos are available in the photos section of this group depicting some of items placed in storage to help preserve the legacy of Tékumel. Enjoy! For more information, please contact the Tékumel Foundation –www.tekumelfoundation.org.

For photos of some of the archived materials and more info, go here.

    Algol Rhythms

I have been a fan of Planet. Algol, the Old School Renaissance Weird Fantasy Sword. & Planet RPG blog, for quite some time. So much so that I have been eagerly looking forward to Blair's PDFication of some of his Algol gaming materials, namely the long-awaited
    Jewel Throne.

Well, even though RL demands have pushed Blair's obligations to Algol fandom to the back burner, we can still get our Algol on. Johnstone@Red Box Vancouver has beaten Blair to the punch and has posted his own, albeit noncanonical, Planet Algol/Apocalypse World supplement. Enjoy.

Hot Elf Chick welcomes you to the OSR!

Today, I'm jumping someone else's train.

    Hot Elf Chick

    Welcome to the OSR!

The OSR, for those of you in Rio Linda, is the Old School Renaissance . It is a rebirth of that Ole Time Religion fun that Dungeons & Dragons used to be.

Coasters Castles Combustion defines the OSR -Old School Renaissance, as "a surge in popularity of previous editions of D&D. Common themes are are megadungeons, sandbox campaigns, and an emphasis on player rather than character skills. Matthew J. Finch's A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming articulates many of these concepts quite well."

Quick Primer to Old School Gaming by Matthew Finch is a great place to start. Swords & Wizardry, the free downloadable old-school clone rules is another. If you want to see how far one can go check out Planet Algol, one of the most original science fantasy campaigns I've ever seen from any gaming system.

An Action Typist on Planet Algol

PLANET ALGOL is the currently at the top of my list of "Campaigns I Wish I Were Playing In." With the possible exception of the Flagons & Dragons Gamma World game, that is.

Just take a look at the latest offering at Planet Algol: a bit of brainstorming of the pulp sword & sorcery sort that makes me covetous.

Flagons & Dragons Podcast is my favorite podcast ever, and currently one of my favorite stops on the internet, period.

I've enjoyed their actual play episodes featuring Gamma World so much, I bought the game. It reminds me of my days when gaming and beer were a weekly occurrence. Thanks F&D for some vicarious gaming godliness.

    Monsterpocalypse Now

There's no need to fear. DHS is here. And they are protecting us from kaiju. " What's kaiju?" you may ask. They are giant monsters popularized by Japanese film-makers like Toho Studios, who gave the world the most famous kaiju: Godzilla. Sure, Gamera can go tear-assing around Japan, but he'd better keep his flame-shooting butt out of the U.S. of A. Too bad these guys weren't around in 1978 when Godzooky single-handedly ruined The Godzilla Power Hour.

According to Reason magazine, the Department of Homeland Security seized the first printing of a strategy guide for Privateer Press's giant-monster collectible miniature game Monsterpocalypse. The result was that the interdiction postponed the game's release for an entire week.

For the full story, see Reason's "Miniature Monsters Attack America."

Next thing you know, the ATF will be interdicting shipments of The Shotgun Diaries.

    What's Everyone So Afraid of?
