Common themes are are megadungeons, sandbox campaigns, and an emphasis on player rather than character skills. Matthew J. Finch's A Quick Primer for Old School Gaming articulates many of these concepts quite well."
Quick Primer to Old School Gaming by Matthew Finch is a great place to start. Swords & Wizardry, the free downloadable old-school clone rules is another. If you want to see how far one can go check out Planet Algol, one of the most original science fantasy campaigns I've ever seen from any gaming system.
