"A Message for The Action Man"

Have you ever listened to a song and your mind's eye is immediately filled with visuals? David Bowie's classic space epic is one such song for illustrator Andrew Kolb.

Every lyric paints such a vivid picture that he figured "Oh hey, I guess I'll make that into a" children's book.

Reason to Get A tumblr™ Account

We've all heard the buzz phrase "comfort food," that is, "food prepared traditionally that may have a nostalgic or sentimental appeal." For some folks, it's mac & cheese. For others, it's chocolate ice cream. For me, it's S.O.S..

But what about comfort sounds? For me, it's the I.T.C. intro (see above). Back in the day, it was the clarion call summoning me from the mundane, uncomfortable world of my awkward adolescent existence to the vibrant worlds of The Muppet Theater, Moonbase Alpha, The Village, and SHADO HQ.

This hit me when I ran across it on my new favorite tumblr blog: Faded Earth.

Faded Earth is a font of old school geekery. Browsing his blog, I felt I had found my long-lost cultural brother. Reading Faded Earth, I ran across Space 1999, Tunnels & Trolls, HPL's Dreamlands. Do yourself a favor, and subscribe.

This Girl for PM

This girl shows that not all of England's Young Nation are in need of a trip to the woodshed (or a snootful of CS gas).

For the rest, Britain should remember my favorite P. J. O'Rourke quote: "Hitting things with a stick is the cornerstone of civilization."

For Want of An Earthworm

When I first saw the link to this article, I almost passed on it assuming it was about outsourcing, NAFTA, Fareed Zakaria, capitalist Red China, or the plutonomy. What I found was a fascinating article that should be of interest to any history buff, alternate history geek, or world-builder.

Trade is an economic activity, but its greatest impact may be biological. Charles C. Mann on stowaway earthworms, far-flung potatoes and the world made by Columbus.
